FFS Donald wants to replace the iconic paint job on Air Force One. I’ve been lucky enough to be up close with the 757s that wear that paint and it is gorgeous. Respectable and bright. I try really hard not to get tied up in the swirl of outrage that follows this person, but it is like painting the White House an nice shade of red or adding some flourishes to the Mona Lisa. Just no.

Always thought the livery on the 757s just doesn’t look as good. Too simplified, and with sharper angles.

Well, the Air Force has traditionally consulted with the sitting president on new presidential aircraft. Ronald and Nancy Reagan picked out the s outhwestern inspired interior scheme for the current 747s, which, despite a slight redecoration under Bush 43, has remained basically intact.

Not sure if changing the livery was discussed at that time, but, since the two older 707s were going to stay in service alongside the new 747s, sticking with the old paintjob was definitely the easiest way to maintain fleet uniformity. This is the first time that basically all of the primary presidential jets are being replaced at the same time, which could have something to do with it.
